Friday night football talk.

Since when has football talk been exclusively on Friday night?

Never. But since I'm doing it now, it's gonna be on a Friday night.

Anyway.

We got third!

Which, I know, is not a trophy, but considering all our trials and tribulations this season - how badly we started, how we lost a bazillion players during the transfer window, how we went through roughly half the season with 0 fullbacks, how we have one (very, very good) striker - finishing behind only Man U (the greatest team that ever was, and ever will be, ever, or something) and Man City (they have unlimited money) is an amazing achievement. Finishing above Spurs is also pretty good too. Well done the Arsenal.

Now let's get van Persie up on this new contract and stuff.

A word on the last day of the season in general.

It was absolutely nuts. As if anxiously watching us hold on to third place, heart almost literally in my mouth, wasn't bad enough, there was the added bonus of seeing QPR 2-1 up against City upon the conclusion of our game.

Turn around, the commentators are saying that CIty had won the game 3-2.

Just like that, in pretty much two minutes of extra time, they had won the Premier League. Unbelievable.

And, I guess, that's why Aguero gets paid a trillion quid a week.

The whole day was just an amazing advertisement for football.

Champions League final to look forward to this weekend. Here's hoping that Bayern destroy Chelsea. Plucky little Chelsea, with their 50 million quid benched striker. Man, I hate them.

We actually won!

And this time, the football failed to disappoint.

It's not very often that we get completely outplayed and still manage a win. Unlike Man United, we oftentimes seem to lack that particular capability.

But this was one of those magnificent times. Up against the ropes for the entire first half, and most of the second, two magical, sublime van Persie goals once again won the game.

And my, how important this win could be.

Chelsea managed to lose to West Brom, which means they're now three points behind in fifth. Spurs are only four points ahead of us now with a game in hand, and play Man United tonight.

Things are looking a little bit better now.

Hopefully Arteta's injury isn't too serious. Looked bad, with the oxygen mask and all.

Let's hope that this win heralds a good week coming up.

Gunner lose again

Excuses are really starting to run out for Arsenal now.

They have almost all of their first-team players back and playing now. And yet, they still manage to get completely ripped apart by Manchester United.

Problem one, I believe, is a lack of heart. Most deficiencies in football can be made up for by sheer power of will and determination.

Problem two, the defence. I have no idea what's wrong with it. Sure, Clichy isn't 100%, but United just seem to defend so much better. I think it's because with them, it's a team effort. With Arsenal, if you're lucky, you get the centre backs defending, and not many other people besides. What's saddening is that while Arsenal are lacking in defence, they were also outclassed in attack. The manager has often defended Arsenal's defensive lapses, saying it's a result of the style of play. Attack, attack, attack. Then why is it always in big matches that Arsenal not only struggle at the back, but are found wanting up the front?

So they're missing van Persie. Surely Arshavin is good enough to fill in for that? But that guy is so inconsistent it's almost funny.

The best thing in this team is Fabregas. Arsenal are so lucky to have him. He's like a university graduate in a team of primary school kids. I'm afraid that he might leave at the end of the season though. Look at it logically. He could go to any team that he wanted. Anywhere in the world. It's not about money. I would be tempted if I were him for two reasons besides money. Reason number 1: the players at other teams are so much better to work with. Would you rather play in teams with Messi, Xavi, Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, or would you rather be mixing it with players like Diaby and Bendtner? Reason 2: the Gunners simply don't look like winning anything in the foreseeable future. It's sad. All they really need is a top-class striker, a decent holding mid, and possibly, but not necessarily, a centre back. That's all it would take for them to be awesome, really. That, and a fighting spirit.

I doubt they can get anything at all against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, of all places. Let's hope they surprise.

A little perspective. Just a little. Please.

I had uni today.

Yay.

Nothing much to report on that front, except for me actually getting what John Gerrand is going on about. That's a first, by the way. Me understanding what's going on in Accounting lectures.

Anyway, what I really wanted to do was to express my disenchantment with some people in the beautiful game.

Actually, this disenchantment has been going for sometime, but has recently been reignited by Adebayor's transfer to Manchester City.

Although I say good riddance, because, in my opinion, he was never that great anyway, it's the comments that he's made after the transfer which irk me.

It goes something like this. "Yeah, sure, I transferred because they offered me more money. But tell me, which Arsenal fan wouldn't change from their 10 pound job to a 30 pound job?"

Football players have been accused of lacking perspective. I agree wholeheartedly.

How is a fan, who is earning 10 pounds (per hour, per day, per week, I don't know what Adebayor's talking about, but yeah, whatever) changing to a job that pays 30 pounds comparable to him? I mean, we're not talking in terms of being paid peanuts here. If you triple 10 pounds, and get 30, if we're talking about per hour, that's massive.

Now, with Adebayor, we're talking someone who's earning tens of thousands of pounds per week, even when he's injured and not performing well, switching teams to earn tens of thousands of pounds more.

His excuse is that he comes from a poor city and a poor country. I don't know about you, but that doesn't make much sense to me. It's not like he's feeding his country. Instead of buying a house per month, he can now buy a house every fortnight. Congratulations.

His nonsensical remarks are almost on par with Sep Blatter comparing Cronaldo to a slave last season, due to the fact that Man Utd wouldn't sell him to Real Madrid. I don't get the argument there either. Both parties signed the contract, both knew the terms when signing. Besides, I wouldn't mind being a slave if I got paid that much. Slave. Blatter is an insult to people who actually live on a pittance.

Just while we're on the topic of inane comments, Valdano, some head honcho guy at Real Madrid, recently responded to criticism from the Spanish Government with regards to their insane spending by saying this: "Sure, people need money, but football also makes them happy." Ok, I like a good game of football. But this is just way out of any perspective, and smacks of clutching at straws to justify a quarter of a billion Euros (and counting) being spent on transfers, while the people of Spain deal with double-digit unemployment. Football doesn't feed the people on the streets.

Well, anyway, this past weeks been pretty torrid, so I guess it fits that I end it by venting my anger at something that most people probably don't care about, and rightly so. Here's hoping that next week will be better.

Mysteries that may never be solved

It's been a big few days.

First up, in the immediate aftermath of Man Utd's destruction, I forgot to say how highly I regard Pep Guardiola. That guy is just phenomenal. First season in charge, wins everything on offer with a team that played like rubbish just last season. And he made them do it with style and coolness. Well done.

Second thing, although not exactly big, is me becoming...

Official BusEco Ambassador for Monash University (Clayton Campus).

It would be pretty cool to tell everybody, except for the fact that I have no idea what the job entails. I'm supposed to go on camp. But then what? I'm supposed to...ambass?

Third thing - and this ranks higher on the stupidity scale than on the big scale - is me epicly getting destroyed in the stats assignment. Which isn't disturbing in itself. What's disturbing is I lost almost 40%, and I don't even know how. I mean, I didn't even make that many mistakes. After performing a regression, I now conclude that my tutor is a ridiculously hard marker. Oh well. I'll get over it.

Barca the passer

My theory is right. Good things happen on Thursdays.

That little team called Barcelona (which, incidentally, was the team that I supported in La Liga since Ronaldinho was there, because I liked Ronaldinho and their kit colour) ripped Man Utd to shreds. No question about it. Messi, and I would contend, Xavi, are both better than Cronaldo. They work within the team as well as solo. Great stuff.

It also begs the question: does Messi practice his headers? For such a short guy, that was quite a skillful header.

Also: all tests are finally over for the semester! Yes, I'm an optimist at times like these. I've only got those little exam things left, and that small essay worth 40% of my mark to do. But we must celebrate the small things, such as tests being over for the semester.

Onward to the glory and honour of exams!

Hala Barca!

And here it is again! The Champions League Final! That day when even Australians wake up to watch the soccah.

Realistically, Man U probably have a greater chance of winning, but I'm sure Barca has a few aces and various other things hidden up their sleeves.

Looking forward to hopefully watching Messi rip through the United defence.

See you on the other side.

Egged

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to a new blog layout. This Togepi layout marks the start of a new era in my blogging career. Not really, no. But I think it's pretty cool. Courtesy of my sister Sarah. I wouldn't have been able to do a new blog layout, and even if I could, I probably wouldn't be stuffed. But it doesn't matter what I think. Tell me what you think of it. That would be much appreciated.

So, "holidays" have been a week and a bit gone. Been studying hard (well, I think so) and generally haven't had much of a life. Talked to a few people on msn, but generally haven't had any human contact with friends as such. I'm gonna go insane soon if I don't. Which is quite a conundrum, seeing as I don't want school to start.

Actually I lie. Well, I don't. I saw friends at the VFL Grand Final gig that out (Tattam) Band did on the first Sunday of the "holidays." I count Yap and Jimmy. That is all. And maybe Simmo. The rest of the people there are pretty much tools.

Now, why am I so early, posting about random stuff? The Champions League match, of course. Man U vs Roma. What a rematch. We all know what happened last time they met. Well, some of us do. 7-1 or some such score line. But Man U don't look like they're going to repeat that with the current goalscoring form they're in. Looks like a bit of 1-0 to me. Lol, watching a replay of the caning now. Cronaldo on fire, as he was liable to be back then. And the match just started, and Louis Saha just headed thin air. And a good header it was. And Cronaldo has an awful haircut. It's almost worst than mine. Almost.

Arsenal top of the league. Study going mildly well. Football to watch. I'm almost a happy man. Except for the lack of human contact. And a decent pair of shorts. Well, anyway, I'll leave you all to watch the game. Or for those of you that don't, I leave you to do whatever you will. You just don't know what you're missing out on.
